Dental hygiene
The main method of preventing various disorders in the teeth is the constant and daily care of dental hygiene. Two fairly frequent pathologies linked to poor or incorrect cleaning are in fact tooth decay and periodontitis, two very common problems.
At Mercuri Orthodontie, we always advise patients to take care of dental cleaning, at least 3 times a day after main meals. When doing this at home, we recommend using a soft toothbrush, and flossing to clean the spaces between the teeth. The latter practice is important in removing plaque buildup. In addition, it is best to brush gently, proceeding vertically and paying attention to the gums.
Although cleaning at home is important, by itself it is not enough, because only with the toothbrush it is not possible to completely and thoroughly remove dental plaque. For this reason, it is advisable to practice professional dental hygiene at least 2 times a year, which can ensure a thorough cleaning.
So let's see what exactly this professional treatment is and how we do it.
What dental hygiene is
Dental hygiene, also known as calculus removal, is a professional treatment performed for the cleaning and health of teeth and gums. This method makes possible cleaning even the most difficult points to be cleaned with the only toothbrush. The objective is to ensure the well-being and the beauty of the smiles of the patients.
Especially, if you realize that your gums are bleeding, it may be a sign that you need a deep and precise dental cleaning.
Dental hygiene helps prevent various disorders:
-Tooth decay
-Inflammation of the gums
-Periodontitis or pyorrhea
This is a selection of all the problems that may arise. Deep cleaning therefore not only has aesthetic value, but also helps to maintain the functionality of the oral cavity in the best possible way.
How we carry out dental hygiene in our dental practice
Among the main services offered by our dental practice there is also, precisely, that of dental hygiene. But how is this cleaning done practically? The used toolis the so-called scaler, equipped with a metal tip, which vibrates thanks to the emission of ultrasounds.
Therefore, we carry out this treatment using an instrument called a scaler which manages to remove even the most hidden calculus and the most difficult to remove manually.
We then use a system, called “air flow”, which thanks to a mixture of air-water-erythritol powder, makes possible removing all surface stains and to perform a perfect polishing of the enamel.
Professional dental hygiene and daily hygiene put together are the 2 fundamental tools for the prevention of various pathologies. It is therefore really important that these rules are learned from childhood and are the basis of our behavior.
During the hygiene session, we can also give you a series of tips on how to care for your teeth at home. First, the teeth should be brushed gently for about 2-3 minutes, moistening the bristles first. Hard bristles are recommended only for cleaning dentures, but not for natural teeth, as they are very aggressive. In addition, we recommend that you replace your toothbrush at least every 3-4 months.
Two other important allies of the teeth are the pipe cleaner and dental floss. The latter should be inserted gently between the teeth and passed with a light movement back and forth. The pipe cleaner, on the contrary, is a kind of toothbrush with intertwined soft nylon strands. To use it, you have to moisten it and make movements forwards and backwards. It comes in many sizes and, if used correctly, it can remove dental plaque between one tooth and the other very well when there are large spaces between the teeth.
Another aspect to take care of in children while in adults is nutrition. Foods that are too sweet or acidic promote the proliferation of bacteria. So, especially after consuming such foods and drinks, it is advisable to brush your teeth.
Thanks to these measures, it is possible to prevent the appearance of many pathologies, which can lead to serious consequences such as tooth extraction. Deep tooth decay and periodontitis can visibly damage teeth. Finally, special attention must be paid to the dental care of children, whose milk teeth have a less resistant enamel than that of permanent teeth.
The appointment for dental hygiene should not be postponed or worse yet avoided because this allows you to monitor the condition of your teeth and keep it healthy and shiny for a long time.
