Teeth bleaching
Having shiny white teeth is definitely a condition that everyone aspires to. In this regard, modern dentistry makes it possible to achieve high-level results. The cosmetic treatment that allows you to whiten your teeth is called teeth bleaching. It is one of the most requested cosmetic procedures.
Despite the fact that each of us has a specific shade of teeth color, over time they can turn yellow and stain. This is due to incorrect habits such as smoking, drinking beverages such as tea and coffee, etc. Poor oral hygiene can also be responsible for this phenomenon.
At Mercuri Orthodontie, we take care of teeth bleaching, which allows you to achieve a radiant smile. So let's see what it consists of, what are the professional methods used by us professionals and how long the treatment lasts.
What is teeth bleaching
Teeth bleaching is a treatment indicated to remove discolorations that can form on the teeth. These discolorations can be superficial or deep if they are caused by taking certain types of medication.
There are different types of bleaching, but the professional type can only be done by the dentist who, before proceeding, checks the perfect state of health of the oral cavity. In fact, if there is a problem, it must first be fixed.
How we carry out professional bleaching
In our dental practice, we use two types of bleaching.
If your goal is to have a bright smile for a special occasion like a party or a wedding, you can choose the “in-office” method. After a hygiene session, you can benefit from a chair side bleaching using a dedicated lamp that lasts about 15 'and allows you to obtain a surprising effect but which has a variable duration that can reach about one to two months.
If your goal is to have a deeper and longer lasting effect, you can go for the at-home method to do with clear aligners where you can apply a specific product that will whiten your teeth in about two weeks. The result is much more durable but it obviously takes more time.
Whitening is not painful, it only causes slight sensibility which disappears spontaneously. This time is essential because to obtain results, it is necessary to pay particular attention to oral hygiene. It is also advisable to avoid foods containing dyes, such as coffee, tea or red wine. It is also not recommended to smoke, as nicotine tends to leave residue on the teeth.
We advise patients to wait at least 15 minutes after completing a meal before brushing their teeth, as the enamel is more sensitive and may be subject to abrasion. It is actually a habit that you should have on a regular basis.
Whitening if carried out professionally by the specialist is not harmful to the teeth.
DIY kits, on the other hand, can ruin the enamel. There are different types of products on the market in the form of gels, pens or strips. These also have the same active ingredients used by the dentist, but they are not in the same percentage. For these reasons, the results will never be the same. In addition, if these tools are not used correctly, they can damage the teeth.
You should also be careful with whitening toothpastes, as they can exert an abrasive and aggressive action that can ruin the enamel. The same goes for other home remedies like baking soda and lemon juice which can be harmful. In addition, the results obtained with similar methods have a limited duration, and repeating them several times can lead to side effects.
How long does the bleaching last?
Professional teeth bleaching treatment is currently the most effective method for having beautiful white teeth. Results vary from person to person and are rarely unsatisfactory. For example, it can happen when the teeth are stained with a particular type of medicine. In these cases, veneers or crowns can be used to apply to damaged teeth.
In principle, this procedure has a variable duration ranging from a few months for in-office whitening to even one or two years for home bleaching with the possibility of being able to repeat the procedure because it is not at all aggressive.
Obviously, this time may vary depending on the characteristics of your teeth. You should also be careful about the type of food and drink you take. Too much coffee can only worsen the color of the teeth. A bad oral hygiene can also reduce the positive effects.
It is therefore possible to make the effect last longer, by taking care of your smile according to the indications that we will provide you.
